The Dominican Republic ('Dominica') covers two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola. The island was inhabited by the Taíno tribe when it was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Christopher Columbus established a small fort on the island and named it La Navidad. Dominica has been ruled by the Spanish, occupied by the Americans, and has been ruled by totalitarian governments on several occasions, until finally the first democratic elections were held in 1998. The country has become attractive for tourism.

Dominica is famous for its excellent beaches, which attract kiteboarding and surfing enthusiasts. The resorts of Punta Cana and Puerto Plata are particularly famous for their beautiful beaches. The country's capital city has the usual bustle of a big city, and the architecture is steeped in history.

The island is home to many waterfalls, the Moss Bay in mid-January is a good place to watch the humpback whales that mate here every year, and if you like to climb mountains, the Cordillera is the perfect place to do it. Santo Domingo, the country's capital, is located in the south of the country and has been around for around 500 years. It was one of the first cities founded by Europeans in the Americas. Many of the ruins and defensive walls from the time of Christopher Columbus still remain in the capital today. The city offers a wide range of nightlife activities, many shopping centres and museums. Santo Domingo is a colonial city, full of bustle and metropolitan spirit. Punta Cana is a resort town in the east of the Dominican Republic. It is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and the calm Atlantic Ocean.

Punta Cana: Bavaro Beach is listed as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world, with soft sand and coconut palms. Uvero Alto Beach is sandy, wide and has a soft sandy beach.

What to see?

✔ Capital Santo Domingo - take a look around the restored colonial part of the city. The city's first buildings, the cathedral and hospital, are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The rest of the city is more modern, with plenty of cafés, shops and places to have fun.

✔ Mediterranean-style village of Altos de Chavon. Here you can see a Greek-style amphitheatre, an archaeological museum and small, cosy shops and art galleries.

✔ Saona Island is a nature reserve. It has white sandy beaches, the sea and marine fauna such as dolphins, flying fish and starfish.

✔ Moss Peninsula - here you should take a walk in Los Haitises National Park, where you will see breathtaking, unspoilt nature.

Saona Island
Travel to the largest island near the Dominican Republic. We'll explore Dominica's flora and fauna, white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters. On this excursion we will visit the unique town of Altos de Chavon, famous for its 16th century Italian architecture. We will also take a motorboat trip to admire the Piscina Natural, a natural pool and one of the largest in the Caribbean. Here you can see the red stars of the sea! Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo is one of the oldest cities in the Caribbean.
