GREEN CAPE ISLAND - SAL - SUNNY SALT ISLAND
Sal, also known as Salt Island, is one of the islands of the Cape Verde archipelago in the western part of Africa. Although small - just 35 kilometres long and 12 kilometres wide - Sal is a tourist attraction in the Cape Verde Islands. The island's great waves and its water sports are very popular with adrenaline-seeking, active leisure enthusiasts, surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers, and the island is home to a number of water sports schools and equipment rental outlets. But this is not the only reason to visit Sal. Famous for the salt mines that give the island its salty name, you'll find extraterrestrial creations and white sandy beaches to warm up on.
CLIMATE
The Cape Verde islands enjoy pleasant temperatures all year round. The climate is tropical. The best time to visit the island is between February and June, when the days are long and sunny and the temperature stays around 24 degrees. From August to October, the island is dominated by rain.
FUN FACTS:
You won't find a single mosquito on this island;
In 1939, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini ordered an airport to be built in the island's capital, as flights between Europe and South America were running out of fuel, so they landed on Sal and filled up. The airport was bought by the Portuguese at the end of the Second World War.
HOW TO KNOW SAL?
There are mini-buses called aluguers that run around the island, taking you to the smallest towns and villages, wherever you want to go. However, these minibuses have erratic schedules and it is best to check with the driver about the time and location of the buses. Taxis also run around the island, and prices usually do not go above 670 escudos (€6). You can also rent a car here without hassle. Prevailing prices are between €350 and €450 per week. For those who want to see the other islets, the most convenient way is by ferry.
CAPE VERDE CUISINE
Cape Verdean cuisine is a mix of African, Portuguese and Creole cuisine. Fresh fish and seafood are always on offer, and the abundance of exotic fruits - papayas, coconuts, guavas - is a sight to behold.
TRADITIONAL DISHES TO TRY ON ARRIVAL:
Catchupa is a stew of beans, corn, sweet potatoes and various other vegetables with tuna;
Bafa - squid served with fried potatoes and rice;
Canja is a thick chicken and rice soup.
CAPE VERDE DRINKS:
Grogue is a strong sugar cane rum;
San Antao is a liqueur made with coffee, fig leaf cinnamon, mint, lime and orange;
Manecome is a wine produced on the island of Fogo.
Strela is a local beer.
One of the Cape Verde islands (Fogo) produces sweet green coffee. It may not be easy to find on Sal, but if you're lucky, it's a must try.

Here, you will discover the island's main industry, salt mining, which began on the island in the 18th century.The salt fields will look like snow falling on the sand in summer, and a tunnel into the crater of an extinct volcano will take you to the spectacular salt lake that has been created here.
Santa Maria. It's a tourist favourite and a place of truly fantastic beauty. The clean 8-kilometre beach, the warm clear waters and the various water activities attract them here.
